Branch President, Barrie Wood commented 'Over 30 European countries, our devolved UK administrations and over 130 local authorities have signed up to this code in full. As a union, we wish to send a signal to our current and prospective Jewish members that we will not countenance antisemitism within the GMB or elsewhere"
Paul Raybould, Branch Secretary and Labour's Parliamentary candidate at the 2017 said "Our branch also urges the Labour party, locally and nationally, to adopt the IHRA code as a means of re-establishing trust and support not only with Jewish party members, but with the wider community too. Our General Secretary, Tim Roache, has been forthright in leading debate on this matter and I am pleased that Labour appears closer to agreeing to the IHRA definitions and examples of anti-Semitism in full"
In a similar vein, as a branch, we are also alarmed that claims of Islamophobia made by Tory peer Sayeeda Warsi appear to have been swept under the carpet by that party. We call upon local MPs and their constituency associations to demand a full investigation into these disturbing allegations. As a union we strive to represent all members in a equitable manner and expect the same of our political parties.
The Motion agreed was worded thus:
Motion to GMB T28 Branch 14 August 2018
This GMB T28 (Torbay and South Devon) branch views with alarm the ongoing row about how to challenge antisemitism within our movement and recognises the hurt and distress this has caused to many in the Jewish community. It recognises the contribution that Jewish members have made to our trade unions and the Labour party historically and the contribution made by Jewish communities to the success of our nations. To rebuild trust with Jewish people in this country we resolve that:
- This branch fully endorses the statement made on antisemitism by our General Secretary Tim Roache (abridged version attached) and commends him for publicising this.
- This branch fully supports the IHRA defining principles of antisemitism and the examples contained therein.
- GMB members delegated to Labour CLPs to support the IHRA definition and attendant examples in full.
- This motion to be sent, with appropriate wording changes, to all Labour CLPs to which we are affiliated to put the case for full IHRA adoption as outlined above.
Seconded: P Raybould (Secretary GMB T28 branch)
